This research article describes the effect of change in the structural, morphological and optical properties due to doping of yttrium (Y) with cobalt oxide nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were synthesised using microwave irradiation techniques. The various weight percentages of yttrium (5, 8, 10 and 15 wt %) were doped. The cubic structure was identified from powder X-ray diffraction pattern and the average grain sizes were 28.37nm, 28.34nm, 23.27nm and 21.28nm. The FTIR spectrum shows the presence of metal-oxygen functional groups. The SEM images depict the morphological changes due to the agglomeration of yttrium particles. The TEM images show the cubic morphology. The recorded UV-vis-NIR spectra indicate a shift of band gap energy values from Eg=5.31 eV to 4.44 eV with the increase in doping percentage. The synthesised nanoparticles possessed potent antibacterial activity. This activity was examined against Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria.
