This paper recovers the conservative ecological protest contained in the sketches of rural scenery featured in Mary Russell Mitford’s  Our Village . By framing these sketches through Gilbert White’s  History and Antiquities of Selborne , and deploying an anonymous narrator who mediates her natural encounters through her shifting affective responses, Mitford articulates a critique of liberal improvement practices, with their grounding in the propertied self, in the wake of Parliamentary enclosures. I examine Mitford’s representations of tree-fellings and forest spaces in several sketches that she revised from  The Lady’s Magazine  versions for  Our Village : “Wood-Cutting,” “The Copse,” and “The Wood.” In these sketches, the destroyed trees are described with the precision and attention of a naturalist, but also figuratively, affectively, and theatrically, with Burkean resonances of fallen nobility. Such figurations enable Mitford to direct attention toward the trees themselves as well as toward the fragile ecological communities they shelter, and so to stage the loss of common lands as a tragedy.
