In this response to Levy and Shalgi’s “Imagination and Fantasy: The Dialectic Nature of the Encounter With Trauma and Dissociation,” (this issue, 2022) the author invites consideration of how intense, regressed treatments implicate not only the patient’s journey, but our own as analysts to the sites of our pain and damage. We as analysts tightly hold our self-representations as healers who are in control, and struggle to keep in mind the influence of our internal objects and how our patients activate them. It is hard to open our eyes to what we are not in control of and don’t wish to see, and it this awakening to our unique, personal vulnerability that challenges us as much as we are challenged by that of our patients. We are called actively to explore how our vulnerability might fuel our disengagement and our role in mutually creating dissociation in a treatment.
