The principal aim of this study is to develop a better understanding of the link between attachment orientation and confirming/disconfirming communication in romantic relationships. Based on attachment theory, we predicted that attachment anxiety and avoidance would associate negatively with confirming communication and positively with disconfirming communication in romantic relationships. Results indicated partner attachment anxiety positively associated with the partner’s disconfirming communication and negatively with their confirming communication. We also found that partner avoidant attachment associated positively with one type of disconfirming communication and negatively with confirming communication. In addition, actor avoidance associated positively with one type of disconfirming communication. Finally, we reported that actor anxious and avoidant attachment moderated the effect of partner anxiety on confirming communication.
