Exploring the perceptions held by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Japanese Red Army (JRA) of the Arab-Israeli conflict, this paper argues that the pursuit of a worldwide Maoist revolution and t the sense of insecurity in the face of a perceived Western threat prompted the East Asian far-leftist government and organization to imagine the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a frontier of the East-West struggle and an epicenter for worldwide revolution. In their theoretical imagination, Israel was a microcosm of Western imperialism, and Arab states served as a buffer blocking that imperialism. In an anticipated domino effect, Israel’s victories at the imagined ‘frontier’ were regarded as a precursor to a Western imperialist invasion of East Asia. This particular worldview not only prompted the global far left to delegitimize Israel, but also constructed a type of negative identity interdependence with Israel in which the far left denied all claims made by Israel as ‘imperialist’, while Israel saw all pressure from the global far left as simply ‘anti-Israel’ or even ‘anti-Semitic’.
