Removal of toxic substances from complex environmental samples is a much more difficult process than from their model solutions. To evaluate the possibility of removing the triazine-based herbicide from multi-component real solutions the sorption of terbuthylazine from soil filtrates by novel polymeric adsorbents was studied. The poly(divinylbenzene) was synthesised and modified with maleic anhydride in Diels–Alder reaction with subsequent base hydrolysis in order to obtain specific adsorbent which will be selective for tested herbicide. The source of herbicide used in the preparation of soil filtrates was commercial plant protection product LUMAX 537.5 SE, containing S-metolachlor, terbuthylazine and mesotrione. Three kinds of soil with different physicochemical properties were used. The adsorptive capacities obtained under real conditions (16.5–8.5 mg g −1 ) were considerably smaller than those obtained in batch model sorption system for the comparable concentration of terbuthylazine. However, they can be still considered as satisfactory ones, and therefore, the proposed material may be used as a selective adsorbent in the systems of agricultural wastewater treatment.
