The conventional Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG)-based Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) connected to the grid is meant for nearly fixed wind speed operation. Since the grid is maintained at a fixed frequency, whenever the wind speed falls below the rated speed, the SCIG-based WECS units are forced to be in the parked condition. In the proposed system, a Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) converter is used between the SCIG terminals and the battery on the DC link. With the inclusion of the VVVF converter, it becomes possible to harvest wind energy even when the wind speed falls below the rated level. The proposed idea has been validated using relevant simulations in MATLAB SIMULINK environment. An experimental prototype has also been setup to examine and validate the proposed idea. The functionality of the proposed system, as confirmed by the simulations and experimental verifications, is promising and is suitable for medium power standalone applications.
