Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) are important candidates for environmental applications. In this study, we have synthesized MNPs by oil in water (o/w) microemulsion assisted co-precipitation method. The particles were obtained by varying the pH (10–12) of the solution. The synthesized MNPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-rays diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-rays (EDX) spectroscopy. Based on the point of zero charge (PZC), sorption of Cr(VI) on MNPs was carried out at pH 6 by batch method. The synthesized MNPs were found highly efficient for sorption of Cr(VI) ions. The sorption efficiency of MNPs prepared at pH 10 showed the maximum uptake of 63.3 (±1.06) mg/g of Cr(VI) ions. The thermodynamic parameters of sorption process like enthalpy and entropy (ΔH and ΔS) were found positive while negatively increased trend of Gibb’s free energy (ΔG) was observed indicating that the sorption process is spontaneous and thermodynamically favorable.
