A field trial was conducted during  rainy ,  winter  and  late winter  seasons of 2015–16 and 2016–17 at the research farm of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dhar, Madhya Pradesh to study the influence of soybean [ Glycine max  (L.) Merrill] based cropping systems on nutrient uptake and soil fertility balance in  Vertisols  of Central India. In this study, 16 cropping sequences was sequenced with soybean and feasible  winter viz . wheat ( Triticum aestivum  and  Triticum durum  L.), chickpea ( Cicer arietinum  L.), garlic ( Allium sativum  L.), onion ( Allium cepa  L.), potato ( Solanum tuberosum  L.), and garden pea ( Pisum sativum  L.) with inclusion of garlic ( Allium sativum  L.), onion ( Allium cepa  L.) in  late winter  and tested in randomized block design with four replications. Soybean yield equivalent (SEY) of cropping system as a whole were recorded significantly maximum in T 15 —soybean (JS 93-05)–potato (Kufri jyoti)–onion (AFLR) cropping sequence (17.7 t/ha) and nitrogen use efficiency (126) as compared to existing cropping sequences (soybean–wheat and soybean–chick pea). The minimum productivity of the cropping sequence based on SEYs was registered in soybean (JS 95-60)–chickpea (JG-130) desi i.e. 4.28 t/ha however, nitrogen use efficiency (35.0) was recorded minimum in T 1 —soybean (JS 95-60)–wheat (HI-1544) aestivum. The uptake of nitrogen (457 kg/ha) was observed higher under T 16 —soybean (JS 93-05)–garden pea (Arkel)–garlic (G-282) while highest phosphorus (65.8 kg/ha) and potassium (562 kg/ha) uptake was recorded in T 15 —soybean (JS 93-05)–potato (Kufri jyoti)–onion (AFLR) system.
