Utilising a hybrid renewable energy system improves the social welfare and the flexibility of the power system. Analyzing the renewable energy potential for a remote geographical location is vital in strengthening the hybrid microgrid. Thus, a distributed generation based hybrid renewable energy system is designed in this work, considering a location in Northeast India using the data from the global wind and solar atlas of NASA. The best suitable HRES design for the site is obtained from the case studies. It is found that PV/Battery/Converter/Generator based hybrid design offers a lower cost of energy. The capital, operational, and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) in this HRES have been calculated, adding the economic feasibility studies. Also, a sensitivity analysis is considered between the diesel price and renewable sources. The optimal energy layout obtained results in a net present cost (NPC) of $ 3.26 M, cost of energy (COE) of $ 0.267 per kWh, the renewable fraction (RF) of 51.6%, and CO 2  emission of 331,683 kg/yr. The Generator only system takes NPC of $ 5.59 M, COE of $ 0.458 per kWh, and CO 2  emission of 1,017,755 kg/yr. The Genset takes a higher energy economics value and CO 2  emission than the optimal HRES. HighlightsEnergy economics and degradation costs of the HRES have been presented.The optimal energy-layout configuration is obtained as PV/Batt/Gen/Converter-based HRES has a lower cost of energy and life-cycle costs than WT/Batt/Gen/Converter.The enhanced hybrid option (PV/Batt/Gen/Converter) is economically cost-effective.The HRES electrical and emission summary is presented.
