Plug flow fluidised dryers have been efficiently used to dry out paddy grains. The performance of dryers mainly depends upon the design of efficient dryer column, where an intense mixing of paddy and hot air makes an efficient dryer. In this study, an analytical and simulation approach is presented for the evaluation of outlet thermal and hygroscopic properties of paddy. The mathematical model presented here predicts the efficient design of a dryer column.Various effects of design parameters such as initial paddy grain temperature, initial paddy moisture content, equilibrium moisture content, operational fluidisation velocity of hot air, etc., were evaluated through the working model and simulation. Model validation for paddy grain was investigated with a small-scale plug flow fluidised bed dryer. The model equations are solved by iterative scheme with the implicit method of discretisation along with desired convergence. A good agreement was seen between the mathematical model results and experimental results.
