One-third of heat generated is dissipated through the engine exhaust gas. Latent heat storage is one of the most efficient ways of storing thermal energy. Thermal storage units that utilise latent heat storage materials/phase change materials have received greater attention in the recent years because of their higher storage density with a smaller temperature difference between storing and releasing heat. In the present work, a heat recovery heat exchanger integrated with an IC engine and a cascade thermal energy storage systems with phase change materials, as the latent heat material is designed, fabricated and investigated. The performance characteristics of the system are also studied in detail. It is found that about 15% of fuel power is stored in the cascaded thermal energy storage system, which is available at higher and lower temperatures and it can be used for suitable applications.
