Ca 2+ /Mg 2+  in inorganic salts can inert the active groups of coal molecules. In this paper, thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to conduct thermal analysis on coal spontaneous combustion before and after adding Ca 2+ /Mg 2+  inhibitors. Moreover, apparent activation energy was used to analyse the inhibitory effects. The results reveal that the delay effect of the inhibitor with 4 wt% Mg 2+  is the best on coal spontaneous combustion. The inhibitor with 1 wt% Ca 2+  can efficiently reduce the heat release of the oxidation reaction in coking coal and anthracite by 36.28% and 78.11%, respectively. The inhibitor with 4 wt% Mg 2+  can reduce the heat release in meagre coal by 54.35%. The apparent activation energy of coking coal, meagre coal and anthracite at the combustion stage can be significantly increased by the inhibitor with 4 wt% Mg 2+  which has the best inhibitory effect, and the increase rates are 102.71%, 167.67% and 103.73%, respectively.
