In this work, waste cooking oil (WCO) was used as fuel in standard and low heat rejection (LHR) diesel engines. The experiments were conducted in standard and LHR engine to measure the performance, emission and combustion characteristics using WCO and diesel as fuels. The brake thermal efficiency was found to be 26.5% for LHR engine with diesel compared to 26% of a standard diesel engine. A significant reduction of smoke and hydrocarbon emission with LHR diesel engine for diesel and WCO as fuels. The CO emission was decreased with LHR diesel engine at higher engine loads. At maximum load, peak in-cylinder pressure of 55 bar observed for standard diesel engine fuelled with diesel as fuel compared to 53 bar with WCO. The ignition delay and rate of pressure rise were found lower with LHR engine.
