Thermal modulation spectroscopy is used to analyze the dynamics of energy redistribution between trap states and band states in the one-dimensional exciton system 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-benzene. The time-resolved decrease in the phosphorescence intensity emitted from localized or “trapped” excited states in 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (TCB), which occurs during the propagation time of a 1.0 msec heat pulse, is analyzed in terms of the direct absorption of phonons resonant with the trap depth. For each of the three traps studied, the heat pulse power dependence of the phosphorescence change can be related to the power dependence of the resonant phonon flux radiated by the heater. The data demonstrates that (i) single phonon events are probably responsible for the promotion of the trap state to the band state (ii) the redistribution of the excitation energy into the bands exhibits an explicit dependence of the density of states function and (iii) the extent of the trap state depletion is shown to be se...
