Humans perceive and understand the world through the five senses—smell, taste, hearing, touch, and sight. It is therefore worth interrogating whether—and how—we as oral historians are making full use of this fact. This article argues that focusing on sensory perception not only brings oral history alive but also gives us a means to gain insight into how people come to know and understand the world and how they engage with it, and that the best method to elicit detailed sensory perception is by asking questions within the space of the interview. Drawing on examples from practice, this article also illustrates the surprising ways in which this seemingly simple idea can give insight into everything from everyday experience to individual and collective consciousness.
