Yarns with good moisture transport property are highly desirable for applications in wearing clothing to maintain a proper thermal-wet comfort, especially when a body sweats. However, most of the studies on moisture transport of yarns only compare the wicking results of different yarns, and the structural ingredients relating to the liquid moisture transport property are still not clearly interpreted. Here, three types of wide-used yarns, i.e. ring spun yarn, rotor spun yarn and vortex spun yarn, are selected to investigate the effect of yarn structure on the liquid moisture transport behavior. The meso-scale geometrical structure of the three kinds of yarns was captured using image analysis techniques, and the liquid moisture transport property was identified and compared based on the wicking experiments. An in-situ observation method with a combination of spatial and temporal resolution was applied to analyze the internal trend of liquid transport in three kinds of yarns with different structure in order to enhance our comprehensive understanding of the structural effect on moisture transport mechanism. Results showed that the wicking height of ring spun yarn was the highest, followed by vortex spun yarn, and rotor spun yarn has the lowest wicking height. The in-situ observation indicated that the relatively homogeneous spiral morphology of fibers in ring spun yarn forms effective transport pathway of liquid, showing excellent liquid transport property. The liquid transport was only observed along the fibers in the middle part of the vortex spun yarns where the fibers were approximately paralleled to axial direction with fiber-to-fiber wicking effect being the main liquid transport way. Rotor spun yarns show similar yarn structures, but the mass hairiness on the surface of rotor spinning prevents the spreading of liquid, resulting in uncertain fluctuations during the liquid transport, thus decreasing the moisture transport property of yarns.
