The effect of surface modification of cotton weaves on the mechanical and morphological properties of polyester composites were investigated using sodium hydroxide and acetic anhydride at concentrations of 6% and 2%, respectively. Cotton yarns of count 2.5Neβ and strength 36.17   N were woven into different weave structures (plain, twill, satin and rib weaves) using Tappet loom AD-A-Harness. Polyester resin reinforced with unmodified and modified cotton weaves were prepared by hand-layup method. Polyester composites prepared with surface modified cotton weaves resulted in the improvement of the tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, flexural and impact strength of the composites. On comparison, the mechanical properties of acetic anhydride modified polyester composites were observed to increase more than those of sodium hydroxides modified polyester composites. The increase could be attributed to more effective removal of lignin and other impurities without the degradation of the fibre strength. The morphological study showed that composites with modified polyester composites exhibited better interfacial bonding between the polyester and cotton fabrics. Also, the presence of ester/hydroxyl functional groups was identified in the composites.
