The synthesis of  (E) -3-substituted styrylquinoxalin-2(1 H )-ones was achieved by the reaction of 3-methylquinoxalinone and aromatic aldehydes using FeCl 3  as a catalyst in toluene under microwave irradiation. The protocol is endowed with milder reaction conditions, high yields of product, and easy workup procedures.
