During the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, it is vital to ensure that work stays safely under the subcriticality state in order to protect workers and the public from a criticality accident. To improve criticality evaluation accuracy, this study was performed to clarify whether the effect of fuel debris shape can be modeled by adjusting the friction coefficient in an MPS-DEM simulation of fuel debris behavior in water. The results showed it was possible to efficiently adjust the friction coefficients to model the shape effect in underwater conditions. Then, from the validation of the adjusted friction coefficients, we clarified that this method can be applied under conditions where the interaction between the fine grain fuel debris is dominant. On the other hand, further research is needed when this model is applied where water flow is dominant.
