Magnesium resinate complex as one of the main components of the formulation of rubber adhesives based on polychloroprene, plays a major role in the adhesion strength of this type of adhesive. In the present research, first the optimum conditions for the formation of magnesium resinate complex was obtained by choosing different solvents and also different amounts of water as catalyst. To this aim, different samples of magnesium resinate complex were formed by the reaction between para-t-butyl phenol resin with magnesium oxide in the presence of water catalyst. Using DSC, FTIR and EDX it was found that toluene is better and more suitable solvent for the formation of magnesium resinate complex. Also, the optimum amount of water as catalyst for the formation of Magnesium resinate complex was determined about 0.66 wt% in solid content. The results of peel strength tests (180º peel) indicated that the adhesive that its Magnesium resinate was formed in toluene in the presence of 0.66 wt% of water as catalyst, had the highest strength. The peel strength of this formulation was determined about 8.57 N/mm and 9.62 N/mm after 4 days and 7 days storage at room conditions, respectively.
