We consider the peculiarities of the agricultural economy of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) and Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). Seven years of conflict has brought about an escalation of prices for food, fuel, and other necessities; farmers growing for subsistence, and even commercial enterprises, face a lack of transport, high costs, low prices and distant markets; investment is held back without safe access and insecurity severely limits people’s ability to adapt. Many have migrated: those who remain on their land find it increasingly hard to provide for themselves, faced with unenviable choices such as the systematic slaughter of livestock and reduction of cultivated areas. Production will continue to fall, which will further push up food prices. There is an urgent need to support subsistence production and stabilise agricultural activities with concrete and timely assistance to the most vulnerable.
