‘Maidan’, as a public space, is an old concept in the Persian language and culture. The concept has changed along with its cultural context, connected with other concepts in a semantic network. This paper discusses one of its fundamental changes rooted in Qajar Iran, the crucial period at the beginning of modern Iran when cultural and social changes accelerated and a novel semantic network emerged. Using pictorial sources of Qajar cities and Qajar written sources, the authors clarify the meaning of ‘maidan’ in context; including the Constitutional Revolution and the ‘public sphere’.
