This study deals with the extraction of essential oil from betel leaf using an ultrasound pretreatment method. The sonication time, operating temperature and power have been optimised on the basis of extracted per cent essential oil yield. It was observed that ultrasound pretreatment method gives higher yield than traditional hydrodistillation method. The components present in the essential oil extracted using both of the methods were confirmed by the gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. The essential oil obtained from both of the methods is showing similar physical properties such as specific gravity and refractive index. The results obtained in this study encouraged the application of ultrasound pretreatment method for the extraction of essential oil.
