The hemp straw based activated carbons catalyzed by phosphotungstic acid were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization and KOH activation. The electrochemical characterization of activated carbon had been examined using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge technique. At the current density of 1 A g −1 , the specific capacitance of activated carbon material doped with phosphotungstic acid (HSAC-P) was 138 F g −1 , which was higher than the HSAC (93 F g −1  at the current density of 1 A g −1 ). The porous structure of carbon material could increase its specific surface area and improve its performance in electrochemistry.
