New economic criticism has refined our understanding of Shakespeare’s engagement with received notions of the gift. Scholars such as Dan Brayton and Steven Mentz have recently vindicated a Shakespearean thalassology reflecting an “oceanic turn” that transformed early modern cartographies and gave rise to new poetic geographies. However, the link existing in the plays between a gift economy of transcendental values and the discovery of the global ocean has not been fully recognised. This article centres on the representation of gold in order to show how evocations of transoceanic voyaging serve to articulate a conception of limitless wealth that underpins Shakespearean discourses of infinite offering and generosity, in particular those of Petrarchan love and divine redemption. It argues that the enactment of the imaginative impact of New World gold is central to Shakespeare’s exploration of the value of gift in a culture increasingly governed by the calculating logic of the market.
