This article focuses on marital relationships in  The Taming of the Shrew  and  The Merry Wives of Windsor  and the assumptions governing those relationships. It examines the predicament of the female sex in a patriarchal society where men exercise “rule, supremacy and sway” and explores the ways in which women negotiate the situation and their position in it. Behind every discussion about marriage in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries lie the Wife of Bath’s  Prologe  and  Tale  and others in the “marriage group” of  The Canterbury Tales , which deal with the all-important question of “maistrye”, and provide insights into the strategies employed by the protagonists in both Shakespeare comedies.  The Taming  asks who tames whom and who is the “Shrew” of the title.  The Merry Wives  examines the conjugal relationship, the attitudes of the sexes towards each other, and redefines marriage through the hitherto neglected Anne-Fenton relationship.
