Significance Higher order thalamic neurons receive input from layer 5 cells of different cortical regions. We address the issue of a possible convergence of information from these different cortical areas onto individual thalamic relay cells. We leverage advances in genetic labeling and serial electron microscopy to address this question. Using dual labeling to distinguish inputs from sensory and motor cortical areas, we provide evidence of integration of different cortical signals on single thalamic relay cells in the posterior medial nucleus. This provides insight into the complex functioning of thalamus.
