Significance When a metallic nanoparticle is brought within the electron tunneling distance from a metal surface, quantum coupling between the nanoparticle and the surface is anticipated. We show that the quantum effect can be directly observed by imaging the nanoparticle with a high-resolution plasmonic microscope. Direct measurement of the transition in terms of a phase shift induced by the quantum coupling between a metal nanoparticle and a metal surface opens prospective for a biosensing principle with surface plasmon resonance imaging.
