Significance This study using a unique culture system revealed that hypoxia induces the dormant state in oocytes through FOXO3. Hypoxia-inducible factors are involved in maintenance of the dormant oocytes under a hypoxic condition. These findings provide mechanistic insight into the transduction of environmental cues that regulate genes involved in the dormant state of oocytes.
