Significance The plant phytochrome molecule consists of an N-terminal photosensory domain and a C-terminal dimerization domain, connected by a flexible hinge region. It was previously shown that a serine residue in the hinge region of oat phytochrome A (phyA) could be phosphorylated in vivo and plays an important role in regulating phyA function. However, little is known regarding the function of the hinge region ofArabidopsis phyA. Here, we show that three residues in the hinge region ofArabidopsis phyA are essential in regulating phyA phosphorylation and function. Our study thus provides new insights into the regulatory role of the phytochrome hinge region, suggesting that phosphorylation and function of the hinge region may differ between oat andArabidopsis phyA photoreceptors.
