Significance Language is among the most important things humans learn. It has long been debated about the extent to which language learning employs mechanisms that may not apply in nonlinguistic domains. The current work uses a metaanalysis to document an important property of how speakers learn novel simple and complex rules about how consonants and vowels form syllables: The simple rules are learned quickly, but the complex ones require a consolidation period before they influence behavior. It is then demonstrated that similar results are seen in the learning of sequential patterns of responses made with fingers and thumbs. Thus, an important property of language learning was demonstrated in a nonlinguistic domain, suggesting that some relevant learning mechanisms are domain-general.
