Brain areas' functional repertoires are shaped by their incoming and outgoingstructural connections. In empirically measured networks, most connections areshort, reflecting spatial and energetic constraints. Nonetheless, a smallnumber of connections span long distances, consistent with the notion that thefunctionality of these connections must outweigh their cost. While the precisefunction of these long-distance connections is not known, the leadinghypothesis is that they act to reduce the topological distance between brainareas and facilitate efficient interareal communication. However, thishypothesis implies a non-specificity of long-distance connections that wecontend is unlikely. Instead, we propose that long-distance connections serveto diversify brain areas' inputs and outputs, thereby promoting complexdynamics. Through analysis of five interareal network datasets, we show thatlong-distance connections play only minor roles in reducing average interarealtopological distance. In contrast, areas' long-distance and short-rangeneighbors exhibit marked differences in their connectivity profiles, suggestingthat long-distance connections enhance dissimilarity between regional inputsand outputs. Next, we show that -- in isolation -- areas' long-distanceconnectivity profiles exhibit non-random levels of similarity, suggesting thatthe communication pathways formed by long connections exhibit redundancies thatmay serve to promote robustness. Finally, we use a linearization ofWilson-Cowan dynamics to simulate the covariance structure of neural activityand show that in the absence of long-distance connections, a common measure offunctional diversity decreases. Collectively, our findings suggest thatlong-distance connections are necessary for supporting diverse and complexbrain dynamics.
