Significance Visually guided actions have been central to the neural and behavioral evolution of primates, culminating in precision grasping and object manipulation. Here, we reveal that the establishment and maturation of the cortical areas controlling reach-and-grasp behaviors are dependent on a transient visual pathway from the retina to the medial inferior pulvinar of the thalamus, which relays the information to the dorsal stream of the visual cortex, via the middle temporal (MT) area, in early life. Disruption of this pathway in early life leads to permanent anatomical, connectional, and reach-and-grasp behavior deficits.
