THE day we know how every Australian plant andanimal responds to three fire intensities, three firefrequencies, and two fire seasons is the day that firemanagers will finally have a decent handle on thismost complex of processes. In the meantime though,where the science runs out fire management isdirected by best guesses. In Australia, these guessesfall into three paradigms: the ecological paradigm;the indigenous paradigm; and the forestry paradigm.The ecological paradigm is species-centred and basedon Ockham’s Razor — the assumption that thesimplest answer is the most likely. The indigenousparadigm is based on the assumption that aboriginalpeople were the dominant drivers of fire regimesbefore Europeans arrived and that the best thingthat we can do to manage fire now is to try toemulate what we think they used to do. The forestryparadigm is based on the assumption that traditionaltimber production practices are the best way to meetfire management aims. In practice, most firemanagement programs are an amalgam of all threeparadigms with priority given to one or anotherdepending on the circumstances and worldview ofthe practitioners.
