The hydrogen bromide catalysed decarbonylations of carboxylic acids in the gas phase proceed through intermediates which are sufficiently long-lived to react with alcohols to form esters.1 The reaction of acetic acid with hydrogen bromide seems to belong to the same class of reactions,2 and has been shown to form an intermediate A* which acetylates isobutene to produce mesityl oxide.3 Accordingly, addition of an alcohol to those reactions which generate A* should result in some ester formation. The results of the study of the effect of methanol on the reactions of acetic acid with hydrogen bromide are now reported.
