During work which was aimed a t the synthesis of the 6H-dipyrido[l,2-c:2',l1-e]imidazolidi-inium cation (I ) , Homer and Tomlinsonl examined the reaction of 2,2'-bipyridyl with methylene sulphate in nitrobenzene. After removal of the solvent and addition of water and sodium iodide these authors obtained a compound Cl,H1,K20212, which crystallized in red needles, melted a t 280°C with decomposition, and had A$$. at 295 mp (E 18,800). On the basis of these data Homer and Tomlinson assigned the structure (11) to this product without defining the positions of the nuclear hydroxymethyl groups.
