However, the material obtained always gave an X-ray powder pattern which was identical with that of natural anhydrite. Sodium salts other than the chloride can also be used ; for example the product obtained by heating gypsum in sodium sulphate solution between 60 and 75 "C gave X-ray diffraction patterns and D.T.A. curves which were very similar to those obtained from the sample prepared in sodium chloride solution. The sodium ion content of the above sample was about 3.374, the slightly higher sodium content compared with the sample prepared in sodium chloride solution may be due to traces of sodium sulphate not completely washed from the sample. It is of interest to note that according to the literature (Hill and Wills 1938) sodium penta calcium sulphate should form readily when gypsum is heated in a 10-14% solution of sodium sulphate between 60 and 75 "C ; however, all attempts to prepare the salt in this way were unsuccessful and a hemihydrate having properties similar to those described here always resulted.
