THE WORLD POPULATION IS AGEING and there is acrisis in hospital care. Correlation is not causation;however, there is an interesting relationshipbetween the introduction of computer assistedhospital statistical returns and the crisis in inpatientcare. This issue of Australian Health Reviewcontains seven papers from the NosokineticsGroup?s first International Health and Social CareModelling Conference held in Adelaide in April2006. A broad range of practical and theoreticalclinical and managerial topics were discussed atthis conference.The United Kingdom-based NosokineticsGroup is a loose worldwide collaboration ofmathematicians, decision scientists, cliniciansand health service personnel developing andvalidating models that describe the process ofinpatient care. Literally, nosokinetics bringstogether the Greek words for disease (noso) andmovement (kinetics). Hence nosokinetics is thescience of measuring and modelling patient flowthrough health and social care systems. Theunderlying premise of collaborating members isthat the world will be a better place when thecurrent tools used to measure the process of careare replaced by a scientifically validatedapproach.
