During the opening of the conference several honorable guests from the local government and city council welcomed the participants and pointed out how the Barcelona region was implementing life cycle thinking in many initiatives. The introductory lecture was given by Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel, the former head of UNEP DTIE in Paris. She reviewed the development of environmental technology, since she began at UNEP in 1989 – a development from cleaner production to sustainable production and consumption.
