Collective coupling of an ensemble of particles to a light field is commonlydescribed by the Tavis--Cummings model. This model includes numerouseigenstates which are optically decoupled from the optically bright polaritonstates. To access these dark states requires breaking the symmetry in thecorresponding Hamiltonian. In this paper, we investigate the influence ofnon-unitary processes on the dark state dynamics in molecular Tavis--Cummingsmodel. The system is modelled with a Lindblad equation that includes puredephasing, as they would be caused by weak interactions with an environment,and photon decay. Our simulations show that the rate of the pure dephasing, aswell as the number of particles, has a significant influence on the dark statepopulation.
