Brillouin oscillation appears in picosecond ultrasonics for a transparentspecimen because of backward light scattering by moving strain pulse. Itsamplitude is comparable with those of other responses, such as pulse-echosignals and through-thickness resonance, obscuring thesenon-Brillouin-oscillation responses. We here find that Brillouin oscillationcan be suppressed in a transparent free-standing film by coating both sideswith metallic thin film of appropriate thickness and that this peculiarbehavior is caused by strain pulses generated on both sides with a slight phasedifference. This phenomenon allowed us to fabricate aBrillouin-oscillation-free diamond free-standing film, which showed highcapability for sensor applications.
