A prototype for a 1-meter long plasma source is developed for plasma acceleration experiments. The lithium neutral vapor with a density of 2×1015 cm3 is ionized by a uv laser pulse and produces a plasma density of 2.6×1014 cm3. The plasma density is limited by the available uv energy. In this prototype, the length of the neutral vapor and plasma column is 25 cm. After ionization the plasma density decreases by a factor of two in about 12 μs. Interferometry in the visible on the lithium neutrals as well as CO2 laser interferometry on the plasma electrons are used as diagnostics for the plasma density.A prototype for a 1-meter long plasma source is developed for plasma acceleration experiments.
