We theoretically study the non-monotonic (re-entrant) activated dynamicsassociated with a repulsive glass to fluid to attractive glass transition inhigh density particle suspensions interacting via strong short range attractiveforces. The classic theoretical projection approximation that replaces allmicroscopic forces by a single effective force determined solely by equilibriumpair correlations is revisited based on the projectionless dynamic theory (PDT)that avoids force projection. A hybrid-PDT is formulated that explicitlyquantifies how attractive forces induce dynamical constraints, while singularhard core interactions are treated based on the projection approach. Both theeffects of interference between repulsive and attractive forces, and structuralchanges due to attraction-induced bond formation that competes with caging, areincluded. Combined with the microscopic Elastically Collective NonlinearLangevin Equation (ECNLE) theory of activated relaxation, the resultantapproach appears to properly capture both the re-entrant dynamic crossoverbehavior and the strong non-monotonic variation of the activated structuralrelaxation time with attraction strength and range at very high volumefractions. Qualitative differences with ECNLE theory-based results that adoptthe full projection approximation are identified, and testable predictionsmade. The new formulation appears qualitatively consistent with multipleexperimental and simulation studies, and provides a new perspective for theoverall problem that is rooted in activated motion and interference betweenrepulsive and attractive forces. This is conceptually distinct from empiricalshifting or other ad hoc modifications of ideal mode coupling theory which donot take into account activated dynamics. Implications for thermal glassforming liquids are briefly discussed.
