As one of the basic components of phononics, thermal diodes transmit heatcurrent asymmetrically similar to electronic rectifiers and diodes inmicroelectronics. Heat can be conducted through them easily in one directionwhile being blocked in the other direction. In this work, we report aneasily-fabricated mesoscale chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond thermaldiode without sharp temperature change driven by the gradient grain structureof CVD diamond membranes. We build a spectral model of diamond thermalconductivity with complete phonon dispersion relation to show significantthermal rectification in CVD diamond membranes. To explain the observed thermalrectification, the temperature and thermal conductivity distribution in the CVDdiamond membrane are studied. Additionally, the effects of temperature bias anddiamond membrane thickness are discussed, which shed light on tuning thethermal rectification in CVD diamond membranes. The conical grain structuremakes CVD diamond membranes, and potentially other CVD film structures withgradient grain structure, excellent candidates for easily-fabricated mesoscalethermal diodes without a sharp temperature change.
