Recurrence in the phase space of complex systems is a well-studiedphenomenon, which has provided deep insights into the nonlinear dynamics ofsuch systems. For dissipative systems, characteristics based on recurrenceplots have recently attracted much interest for discriminating qualitativelydifferent types of dynamics in terms of measures of complexity, dynamicalinvariants, or even structural characteristics of the underlying attractor'sgeometry in phase space. Here, we demonstrate that the latter approach alsoprovides a corresponding distinction between different co-existing dynamicalregimes of the standard map, a paradigmatic example of a low-dimensionalconservative system. Specifically, we show that the recently developed approachof recurrence network analysis provides potentially useful geometriccharacteristics distinguishing between regular and chaotic orbits. We find thatchaotic orbits in an intermittent laminar phase (commonly referred to as stickyorbits) have a distinct geometric structure possibly differing in a subtle wayfrom those of regular orbits, which is highlighted by different recurrencenetwork properties obtained from relatively short time series. Thus, thisapproach can help discriminating regular orbits from laminar phases of chaoticones, which presents a persistent challenge to many existing chaos detectiontechniques.
