The electrostatic interaction between colloidal particles trapped at theinterface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions is studied in the limitof small inter-particle distances. Within an appropriate model exact analyticexpressions for the electrostatic potential as well as for the surface and lineinteraction energies are obtained. They demonstrate that the widely usedsuperposition approximation, which is commonly applied to large distancesbetween the colloidal particles, fails qualitatively at small distances and isquantitatively unreliable even at large distances. Our results contribute to animproved description of the interaction between colloidal particles trapped atfluid interfaces.
