Semiconductor avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are commonly used for singlephoton detection in quantum key distribution. Recently, many attacks usingbright illumination have been proposed to manipulate gated InGaAs APDs. Inorder to devise effective counter-measures, careful analysis of these attacksmust be carried out to distinguish between incorrect operation and genuineloopholes. Here, we show that correctly-operated, gated APDs are immune tocontinuous-wave illumination attacks, while monitoring the photocurrent foranomalously high values is a straightforward counter-measure against attacksusing temporally tailored light.
