Using complexified quaternions, a formalism without Lorentz frames, andtherefore also without vierbeins, for dealing with tensor and spinor fields incurved spacetime is presented. A local U(1) gauge symmetry, which, it isspeculated, might be related to electromagnetism, emerges naturally.
