Besides permitting an accurate determination of theferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition temperature and thecharacteristic temperatures for the beginning and end of the growth ofmartensite (austenite) phase at the expense of austenite (martensite) phasewhile cooling (heating), the results of an extensive ac susceptibility, soundvelocity and internal friction investigation of the thermoelastic martensitictransformation in melt-quenched (site-disordered) Ni55Fe20Al25 alloy provide aclear experimental evidence for the following. Irreversible thermoelasticchanges (thermal hysteresis) occur in the austenite phase in the premartensiticregime. In the heating cycle, the system retains the "memory" of the initiationand subsequent growth of the martensitic phase (at the expense of the parentaustenite phase) that had taken place during the cooling cycle in theaustenite-martensite phase coexistence region. We report and discuss thesenovel findings in this communication.
